Ordering Your PetBear:
Don't shave your pet!
Most pets have two types of fur: undercoat for warmth, and guard hair for a protective outer layer. The undercoat is what makes the best yarn. The best way to collect this fur is with a 'slicker' brush (the kind with the wire teeth), though most brushes or combs will work. If your pet is small, it may take weeks or months to collect enough fur for a large bear. Consider this time well-spent with your pet. You may also opt to have a smaller PetBear made.
Some pets may not have any undercoat to speak of. Most terriers and smooth-coat dogs don't have much. Hairless cats probably won't provide bear-fur, and Siamese cat fur can be difficult, but not impossible, to spin. Most short hair cats do have a good undercoat. I can spin hair cut from poodles if it is long enough. If you are not sure if your pet's fur will work you can arrange to send me a sample to test.
The hair you send me should be free from mats, but doesn't have to be clean.
With two ounces additional fur I can also create a pullover sweater so your PetBear can be well dressed.
Here is an approximate guide to how much fur is required for different sized PetBears.
